Dailymotion: global video streaming
Scality RING solves Dailymotion’s growing storage needs for video distribution
Now their storage capacity can easily meet the hyperscale growth of their content and business
Founded in 2005, Dailymotion is a global video streaming service that connects more than 300 million unique monthly entertainment-seekers to their personal world of news and entertainment.
Built on a clever player, intuitive algorithm, and carefully selected recommendations made by experts who really love great videos, it’s a one-stop shop for enjoying stories from the best creators around.
Owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi and headquartered in Paris with offices in New York, Singapore and Marseille, North American launch partners include BBC News, VICE, Bloomberg and Hearst Digital Media. The service is available worldwide in 183 languages and 43 localized versions.
Dailymotion is committed to creating a heightened video experience, believing that sharing video is sharing human experience. Second in video user traffic only to YouTube, Dailymotion.com’s 300+ million users watch 3.5 billion videos from its player each month. Those users contribute approximately 7 hours of video uploaded every minute of every day.
The challenge
Com Hem is a triple-play provider — offering cable television, fixed-line telephone and broadband internet — with service to 40% of the homes in Sweden. A leading player in a competitive market, Com Hem is on a mission to transform its business entirely around what its customers want and need.
When Com Hem started looking to replace the legacy scale-up storage system that housed their media content, two critical requirements were top of mind: lower cost and increased resiliency.
The outcome
Dailymotion knew that a hardware-agnostic solution would be best because of the advantages it brings in lowering TCO and simplifying growth over time. Scality was the most obvious choice with regard to those specifications.
Right from the start, Scality showed significant performance improvement over the legacy solution. Using Scality RING directly behind the application servers, rather than using an intermediary tier of protocol servers, simplified the overall architecture and reduced the total amount of hardware, plus storage and server maintenance.
Since the original installation of Scality RING in 2014, Dailymotion has undergone several smooth expansions. Scality provides more than 30 usable petabytes as of the spring of 2017 and is poised to continue to grow with Dailymotion’s needs.
